It's difficult to summarize an entire decade in just a few words, but there's a noticeable rise and fall in terms of their success. While some of Comix Zone's designs and characterizations are "dated," to say the least, it'd still be fun to see a flashy throwback to the '90s up on the big screen. He has just about all the hallmarks of an "edgy 90s guy," including a ratty ponytail, fingerless gloves, shorts, combat boots, a vest over a hoodie, and round-frame sunglasses. All you'd have to do is take a look at Sketch Turner himself. Just as Sonic the Hedgehog was a unique product of the 1990s, so too was Comix Zone. It's something we still haven't really seen outside short films and independent productions, so imagine what it could look like with a full studio budget behind it. At multiple points, Turner even tears off part of the background to form projectile weapons.Ĭonsidering how much Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was praised for taking full advantage of its animation style, who's to say that Comix Zone couldn't accomplish something similar? Sega even filed a patent for Comix Zone to protect its comic-inspired visuals. Turner traverses the world by physically leaping into new comic panels, occasionally destroying the margins between them to progress further. Enemies are "drawn" into existence by Mortus at a moment's notice, starting off as basic sketches before being quickly colorized. The game itself is famous for taking into account every possible aspect of being stuck inside a comic book. It's an opportunity to not only tell a story directly inspired by comic books but to do so in a way that both acknowledges its own medium and legacy. When Mortus reveals his plans to take over Turner's body in reality, Turner must find a way to survive with the help of one of his characters, General Alissa Cyan. Turner, meanwhile, is thrown into the world of Comix Zone. some reason, as a sketchy, monochrome visage of his illustrated self. It's easy to argue that there's currently a drought of comic-inspired films outside the popular works by Marvel and DC.
